Take this portable puzzle anywhere – and never lose the pieces. Kids Shape Puzzle entertains your pre-schoolers, even as it builds their cognition and fine motor skills. Children will enjoy sliding the pieces from the left side of the screen towards the correct spot on the puzzle shape. When your child has correctly placed all of the pieces, she gets the “I did it” satisfaction of seeing the completed image. With more than 80 puzzles featuring letters and numbers, as well as cute animals like kittens, puppies and frogs, you may never get your phone back.

This basic math skills app speaks the numbers to pre-schoolers, whether they know English, Japanese, French, German or Spanish as their first language. Your child can choose addition or subtraction and then select from several available answers to complete the equation. As your child successfully answers the questions, she can advance to harder ones. The colorfully designed screens feature cute drawings to that will delight your pre-schooler.

Even hardcore spelling-test-haters will embrace the challenge of this app. You select the level of difficulty and a set a timer to encourage quick thinking. This app also builds vocabulary with clear audio clips and short definitions. With this app, your child will never know it all. There are thousands of words available and updates that add new words are frequent.

Quick: What’s the capital of North Dakota? You and your kids would know if you had this app. From a US map or an alphabetical index, click any state to discover state capitals, state mottos, postal codes, state flowers and more. Trivia questions challenge your memory and banish geographical illiteracy forever.

 

MapMaster

This fun geography game uses GPS coordinates to help you pinpoint places around the world. The app includes 7 different challenges, and can be played with up to 10 players. There are over 350 places to locate, including capitals in the US and all the continents. You can challenge your friends to pinpoint to the largest U.S. cities and other famous places. One of the app’s best features is that you can freely move your pin around a scrolling map until you are ready to pin the exact location. Your pin will remain fixed on the screen while you continue to scroll the map for the next location. You earn points based on how close your pin is to each location.

Fun Math Tricks

Here’s the app that will help your kids ace the SAT with time to spare. Fun Math Tricks teaches you moves that solve difficult math problems at lightening fast speed. Learn how to quickly square a number that ends in 5 or multiply numbers between 100 and 109.

This app’s 25 mental math tricks help you build skills to quickly solve math problems on the ACT, GMAT and MCAT as well. RanVic says more math tricks are in the works.

Spanish Verbs Pro

With this portable Spanish reference guide, you can master the correct conjugations for hundreds of Spanish infinitives. Simply choose the infinitive you want to work with, and see the proper conjugations for every verb tense, including the present, past, and past perfect. Improve your spoken fluency by listening to an audio clip after each conjugation. Just make sure to listen intently!

Chemistry Helper

Chemistry students will appreciate this quick reference tool, which includes a periodic table with helpful links to Wikipedia. There’s also a table of polyatomic ions, constants, solubility rules and organic chemistry functional groups, plus a tool to calculate molecular masses of compounds. If you like using the no-cost version, $1 buys you an ad-free version.

Calculus Tools

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Pimp your calculator with this app. Its custom keyboard helps you find derivatives, compute different types of integrals from formula tables, and locate tangent lines and Taylor series. You can also plot graphs of functions, including polar, parametric and slope fields. The 3D graphing is pretty cool to use too.

Driver’s Ed 

Price: $2.99; Webrich Software Pvt. Ltd.

Here’s your answer to DMV dread. Prepare yourself or your kids to take the driving test by learning road rules from this app. Then, zoom into its mock tests, which simulate an actual driving test. It tracks your progress, and provides an explanation for all the questions. With topics including Accidents, Alertness, Hazard Awareness, Road and Traffic Signs, Safety and Your Vehicle, and more, this app may well be the only app that actually improves road safety. Just pull over before engaging.
